One day I was be-bopping along jamming to the music in my head while wondering if my thighs could handle grabbing a cupcake on the way home. The next thing I knew, my entire world crashed and burned.

I used to wake up at night in a sweat, crying because I’d dreamt that my husband was cheating on me, or that he hated me, and resented my kids. He’d always hold me close and tell me it was all just a dream, that he loved me and our family and that he’d never let me go.

He was a fucking liar.

Now I spend my days taking photos of scum just like him, trying to be a champion for other’s being taken advantage of by the losers in our town, and my nights being a single mom to my beautiful twins.

I’ve got great friends who have my back, and a sexy, mysterious motorcycle man who keeps showing up when I need him. Maybe things are starting to look up, and one thing’s for sure… There’s always room for cupcakes.

My Review:

I read this book in a couple of hours, and loved every second of it! It reminded me of an R version of the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, but without the love triangle that drove me crazy.

Bethany Lopez wrote Lila and her female friends perfectly. It felt as if I was out with my friends; the way we talk and swear. A lot of the books I read don’t include swear words, and if they do, they can feel fake, as if the author put them in to make the book more hip. But the way Lopez wrote, they felt natural.

The sex scenes with Cade were hot, and were written in the way people have sex. No strange phrasing like, “his member hit my womb,” because if it did, you would most likely have to go to the hospital. I really enjoyed how up front Cade was about his past sexual encounters, and where he wanted this relationship to go. It was a refreshing change from a lot of the romances I read where one or both of the characters are constantly doubting the relationship, or changing their minds.

The book also included the perfect amount of tension when Lila starts photographing the new drug dealers in town. I don’t want to spoil anything, but there are a couple of scenes towards the end that are really intense.

I would highly recommend this book if you are looking for a hot romance with strong female characters that is also funny, and has a bit of thriller thrown in. I noticed that Lopez has a bunch of other books out, which I am excited to explore. And I hope she writes more with these characters, since I would love to read one with the reporter/blogger and the lawyer…. I think they could make an interesting couple.
