Ella Mae LeFaye’s delicious pies are still drawing long lines—as well as the attention of Beatrice Burbank, president of the Camellia Club, a philanthropic organization comprised of high-society Southern ladies from the charming and affluent town of Sweet Briar, Georgia. To ensure the success of their centennial dessert cookbook, Bea hires Ella Mae to teach the tasty tricks of her trade to the club’s members at their annual retreat. Eager to work on new recipes for customers with food allergies and dietary restrictions, Ella Mae readily agrees.

But when Ella Mae finds Bea’s body floating in Lake Havenwood, she wonders what she’s gotten herself mixed up in. Someone certainly wanted Bea to eat humble pie, and the retreat offers no shortage of unsavory characters, including Ella Mae’s longtime nemesis, Loralyn Gaynor. Ella Mae definitely doesn’t need magic to tell her she must find the killer before someone else gets panned.

My Review:

I read the first book in this series, Pies and Prejudice on a vacation in Massachusetts, so it will always hold a special place in my memories. I’ve enjoyed every book in The Charmed Pie Shoppe Mysteries, and book five is another wonderful addition to the series.

This is a series that I think should be read from the beginning. Ellery Adams does give you enough information to be able to figure out references from past books, but there are so many character relationships, that you will get more out of them by starting with the first book.

The way Adams describes the town makes me want to go visit. It’s such a friendly place, even if murders do occur. And each book has great character development. Picking up a new book is like visiting with a good friend that you haven’t seen in awhile. The magical community adds another interesting layer to this series. And I really like how the magic is progressing, and new story arcs are branching out from it.

With some cozy series, I get bored with them after awhile. You have the main characters, with a few new ones thrown in, and it’s usually pretty easy to spot the killer. With this series, that isn’t the case. This book in particular had me guessing until the end. And you get so much more story in these books besides just trying to track down the killer. The Row for Dough boat race added a bit of fun, and also showed some small time charm.

If you enjoy cozies, then this is a series you definitely need to start reading.
