On the eve of her sixteenth birthday, the young sorceress Sabrina Spellman finds herself at a crossroads, having to choose between an unearthly destiny and her mortal boyfriend, Harvey. But a foe from her family’s past has arrived in Greendale, Madame Satan, and she has her own deadly agenda. Archie Comics’ latest horror sensation starts here! Compiles the first six issues of the ongoing comic book series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

My Review:

This is not the sweet witch that Melissa Joan Hart played in the mid-90’s TV show, Sabrina, The Teenage Witch. It is so much darker and grittier, and I loved it!

The story takes place in the 1960’s, which is when Sabrina was first introduced in the Archie Comics Group, so in a way, they are going back to their roots with this storyline. Sabrina Spellman, her father, and aunts are dark witches. The kind that actually worship Satan. While Sabrina still seems pretty sweet, especially compared to the rest of her family, she has true evil lurking inside of her. And the times she lets it out in the graphic novel are wonderful.

There is never a question as to if Sabrina will choose to be a bride of Satan, this shows what happens to her a few months before her 16th birthday, and the big night. There is a tragic Romeo and Juliet theme with her boyfriend, Harvey. Since he is a mere mortal, Sabrina is not allowed to lose her virginity to him (saving it for Satan), but teenage hormones are in full swing.

There are also side stories, and we see what happened to her mom and dad, and we also meet Madam Satan, who is one devious woman. And we get cameos by Betty and Veronica, which is fantastic. The story was amazing, and the artwork was pretty good. If you want to read a different spin on Sabrina, or enjoy horror comics, this is one I would highly recommend.
